What is the ATEC Checklist?

The Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) is a one-page form designed to evaluate the effectiveness of treatments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Bernard Rimland and Stephen M. Edelson of the Autism Research Institute1 developed it. The ATEC consists of four subtests:

  • Speech/Language Communication (14 items): This subtest measures the verbal and nonverbal communication skills of the individual with ASD.

  • Sociability (20 items): This subtest assesses the social interaction and emotional responsiveness of the individual with ASD.

  • Sensory/Cognitive Awareness (18 items): This subtest evaluates the sensory processing and cognitive functioning of the individual with ASD.

  • Health/Physical/Behavior (25 items): This subtest examines the physical health and behavioral issues of the individual with ASD.

    ATEC scores range from:

  • 0-10 do not indicate autism.

  • 10-30 suggest ADD/ADHD or show details for finishing recovery.

  • 30-160 indicate autism.

Parents, teachers, or caregivers can use the ATEC to monitor the progress of the individual with ASD over time and compare the effects of different treatments. The ATEC is available in 25 languages and can be completed online for free. Several studies have validated the ATEC and have shown good reliability and validity.
